Saturday at BG 6/23
A number of members took advantage of the dryer weather on Saturday to enjoy the different events at Bloomington Gold. Included was the L88 parade along with the ZR1 rides, autocross, and the Gold Tour which ends the 3 day event. Weather wise, Saturday turned out to be a rain-free, overcast but pleasant day at Bloomington Gold 2018. The day was dominated by the sounds of Ron Fellow’s 2019 ZR1s ripping up and down Hulman Boulevard. They must have given hundreds of rides to excited attendees over the three days. The next big attraction was the heavily promoted “L88 Explosion”. There was no literal ‘explosion’, just the single largest gathering of L88 Corvettes at one location at the same time. The L88s were the epitome of essentially street legal race cars from Chevrolet from 1967 to 1969. Today, they are very highly coveted collector cars, some worth deep into the six figure range. The highlight was when the 60 or so of the L88s pulled out of the display area onto the staging area of the IMS plaza. The sounds of the cars was pure music to those who remember Corvette racing back in the days. The cars were on display on the Plaza for photo opportunities as a group. Then, one by one, they proceeded down Indy 500 Legends Row and onto the famous oval for a couple of laps at a ‘controlled’ speed. One of the L88s was driven by Corvette Hall of Fame member Tony DeLorenzo. Tony was very instrumental in L88s racing dominance in 1967 and 1968 in SCCA racing and the Daytona 24 hour and Sebring 12 hour events.
