COCI Western Tour - Day 3 07/14
Sioux Falls to Spearfish
Day three had the group starting from Sioux Falls and heading to Spearfish, the Black Hill's 50 Corvette Classic site. It was a rainy start to the morning, but we soon drove out of it and headed for our first stop, after getting gas, was the Corn Palace in Mitchel SD. This is a building that has a front facia made from corn, and has been done since 1905 and is renewed every 10 years. It is a very interesting place and has a ton of corn souvenirs. The next stop was the bluff over looking the Missouri river where the Lewis and Clark expedition trip is documented. There is also a fairly new statue called Dignity which celebrates the earth and the sky in a beautiful setting and can be seen for miles. From there we headed to Al's Oasis, which is just across the river. We had planned to eat lunch there but the wait time was going to impact our schedule to off to the famous Wall Drug the group went. Once there lunch was obtained and a bit of necessary shopping before heading on to Spearfish. A final gas stop of the day was made which caused a bit of an issue as the reentry onto 90 was closed, so the group got split up doing the detour and got back together just before their exit in Spearfish. It was decided to skip the 'dinner' being provided and have a nice sit down meal instead. Everyone then headed to the motel as Thursday was a early call to go on the tours that everyone had signed up for.
