Cambridge City DnD 09/11

A small group of members were invited to Randy & Sherry's house for the start of a drive to Cambridge City and go to a park on the north side of town. This was before the Corvettes of Central Indiana club was officially formed, but the basic group had been doing things together during the summer of Covid-19 but not documenting them. This time the group from the Northside had several challenges getting to their house, one was an oversize load blocking the road and then in the zigzagging around they were thwarted at a newly paved road. Once there the group checked out the Corvette Barn before heading out. The drive to the park was uneventful on nice county roads then finishing up on US 40. Once in the city of Cambridge Randy & Sherry were shocked to find that the parking lot at the park had just been sealed, they had just checked it out the day before. So a quick change of direction took the group to the back of the grocery store lot just across from the park's shelter. For those that didn't bring their lunches a call was made to the No. 9 Grill for carryout which was enjoyed. Sherry even brought table cloths (Dollar Tree shower curtains), which worked great. After eating some worked their way up to 70, others to 40, and yet others took 38 back home on the beautiful afternoon for a Drive N Dine.. just the way that they were meant to be.
Be sure to read Greg's humorous accounting of the day below the gallery!
A great day for a Drive N Dine and the BCG rides again!  The weatherman had promised Friday would be the "pick of the week" but instead it started out like the seven ugly dwarfs; Hazy, Sodden, Foggy, Cloudy, Dreary, Misty and Unhappy.  None the less we hoped for the best and jumped into our supercharged steed to meet some friends for a 2020 style Drive N Dine.
DK and I drove directly to Randy & Sherry's who were hosting the event for the members of the Bourbon Call Group.  This is a group of friends who have been holding daily Zoom calls to stay in touch during the pandemic.  We know us old folks are at higher risk so we are doing the social distance thing and exercising caution and trying to stay healthy.  We don't want to make all our friends sick either should it finally catch up to one of us.
Others from the BCG were meeting up in a caravan so they could all get lost together instead of one by one.  First Bill & Erika stopped at Lowes in Carmel where they were joined by Phil & Anita, Wylie & Rita and Bob & Cindy.  Then the caravan rolled on to Grace Church over on Olio Road.  There they met Charlie, Paul & Londa and John & Ruth who had been busy praying that Bill could find the Church.  Paul passed the collection basket before the faithful departed for the Sprague hacienda and Paul had them all believing they were actually donating to the Church.
Meanwhile DK and I are cruising along with the top down and cutting a path through the gloom on our way to the hacienda and listening to a music CD when a miracle occurred.  The song "Aquarius" starts playing and DK is singing along and just as she throws her hands up in the air and sings the "let the sunshine in" part, the sun burns hole in the clouds, the gloom lifts and a sun ray comes down and lights up a halo around her golden hair!  She's ecstatic and says "I did it!"  I look for a 7-11 to buy a lottery ticket.
We soon after arrive at Randy & Sherry's in a brightened mood and find we are the first to arrive.  DK and Sherry start talking to do some catch up.  Randy and I both grab 2-way radios to see if the rest of the group is getting close.  I warn them if they drive too fast I will get someone to call the Police on them and turn them in for the award money.  Greenfield is like that, they don't cotton to northerners rolling through their plantations and raising hell so they pay whistle blowers very handsomely.
The rest of the group was slightly delayed because after Paul tucked the collections basket safely away in his trunk they headed south on Olio Road only to have their path blocked by an over sized behemoth truck that wasn't supposed to be there and couldn't go any further because he was too fat.  So the group had to consult GPS Central (aka Bill) for a plan B.  After they got that sorted out they started again and ran into road paving so they went back to GPS Central for a plan C.
Eventually the group zig zagged their way to Greenfield's suburbs and made their grand entrance into Randy & Sherry's neighborhood.  All the neighbors were out working in their yards and they started gawking at the parade of Vettes going by.  One lady who was watering her flowers with the garden hose ended up watering her right foot.  Another neighbor who is the proud owner of a 2017 Red C7 came trotting over to meet the group and drool on the paint of Phil's C8.
A few minutes later Tom & Nancy made their appearance.  They were having an issue with a contractor and were busy tracking footsteps across their new carpet.  While we all were enjoying the Corvette show, Sherry went into the house and came out with a bag of tomatoes.  I ducked and then hid behind DK.  Turns out that Sherry had planted some magic tomato seeds she received anonymously in the mail from China and they had grown over the top of her barn so she was just being generous and sharing the surplus.  That really didn't make me feel less nervous though because now all the women had tomatoes.
After visiting a little while and checking out Randy's Corvette Barn, Randy called a driver's meeting and passed out written information printed on the back of what looked like Trump's tax return and gave us precise details of how we were going.  Someone in the back raised their hand and asked if he could just follow the Vette ahead of him.  After some discussion, a lot shoulder shrugging and looking at each other and some head nodding, we all thought that might work and agreed on that plan.
Ten beautiful Corvettes left the neighborhood and that poor woman got her left foot wet too.
Randy & Sherry led us on some nice back roads towards Cambridge City.  The traffic was light.  We kept the group moving together and thanks to Donna we were in nice bright sunshine, which I guess is two miracles.
Eventually we reached our destination at a small park in Cambridge City.  As luck would have it they decided to pave the parking lot that day so we could not drive into the park.  Randy quickly went to plan B and we confiscated some Corvette parking in the adjacent grocery store lot and Sherry went into clear it with the manager.  I don't know how many first born sons they wanted but Sherry came out smiling so I guess she was pleased with the deal.
Charlie & Greg went looking for the park restrooms and after checking out all the ball fields and building structures around the park they decided that the loan restrooms were locked up tight.  By that time they were far from the maddening crowd and were running out of time.  They discovered some graffiti on the side of a building that looked like it said "pee here", so they did.  They are still hoping they weren't on surveillance cameras and end up with "wanted" pictures on tonight's CNN news report.
Meanwhile the gang had called the nearby restaurant to place their carry out orders for our late lunch and were cooling their heels waiting for the food to be ready.  With idle time on their hands some of the "girls" went for a hike and some including Rita and Cindy went over and played on the Merry Go Round.  This could be a new Guinness world record.  The guys were busy sizing up the baseball fields in the park and wishing they had brought their bats and gloves (DK won't let me say it.)  They were fondly remembering the days when they would strive to hit it over the 410' center field fence and maybe had a reasonable shot at the 360' mark down the left field line.  The smaller of the fields with the 150' straight away center field fence and the 100' foul lines was looking pretty tempting because they were thinking they could maybe still do that.
Soon the food was ready and we walked over to the restaurant to pick it up.  We ate it in the shade of a shelter house.  It had 4 tables and Sherry had thoughtfully shelled out big bucks for some Dollar Tree shower curtains to cover the tables.  Since we are trying to social distance, four tables couldn't handle the entire group so many of us had brought lawn chairs for the event.  As usual the group enjoyed eating good food, talked and laughed a lot and had fun.
Thank you Sherry & Randy for hosting this event as we all had fun.
Before DK's sun could disappear, we all called it a day and headed for our ranches.  With several options US40, I70, IN38, etc. for the drive home the group scattered in all directions and hopefully no one had to spend the night in Ohio.
We look forward to seeing the BCG ride again soon and we hope that when this pandemic is over we can start opening these events up to all of our friends.  Events like these with our Corvette friends are always a lot of fun and we are truly blessed to have great friends and fun toys!
