Monon Train Museum 06/29
On a beautiful early summer day Tom & Bob were finally able to take the trip to the Monon Connection Train Museum and the Whistle Stop restaurant that they had started planning several months ago. Unfortunately the delay was due to the original owner passing away a few days before the original date. With the new date multiple pre trips were made to find ways around the Indiana construction season now in full effect. The day's trip started at the Kroger on Michigan road with 9 Corvettes and 15 members arriving before 10. Those able to enjoy the day were Tom & Nancy, Bob & Cindy, Charlie & Eileen, Paul & Londa, John & Ruth, Phil, Doug & Arminta, Randy & Sherry, and Bill & Erika. While getting gathered up, Paul even checked out the motor home that is in the background which turned out to be the Rahal teams. Once underway we headed North and over to the county line road to 38 and up to Frankfort & Delphi, with a county road construction thrown in. Once in Delphi a quick stop at McDonalds before the second half of the trip to Monon. Once there we were ushered into the back dinning room with a lot of memorabilia in it. After we had a great lunch our guided tour of the nations largest private train museum began. The museum itself is amazing with a huge collection of anything railroad related including dining service from many rail lines, lanterns, engine bells including one from Lincoln's funeral train just in the first room. The depot room had an amazing amount of items including track equipment and an actual station that had been part of the Illinois Central line. From there we were shown the Flagler car #90 which had been owned by Henry Flagler the founder of Standard Oil with J D Rockefeller. Actually the car had been recently moved from the Noblesville park train display. The car itself is amazing with Tiffany windows throughout along great woodwork and interesting innovations for the time. Be sure to check out the link below to the museum. It was a great day and many thanks again to Tom & Bob for taking the time to set it up.
