Greenfield Meals on Wheels Car Show

A group of members went to the show on Saturday August 27. Scroll below the pictures for the diary of the day's events.

Greenfield Meals on Wheels the full story

Sarah Lee and Dick & Bonnie arrived at Greg & Donna's house at 7:15am with bright shiny and well cleaned Corvettes ready to go to a car show. Greg & Donna took 2 Vette's; Donna's 2000 Navy Blue Coupe and Greg's 2001 Torch Red Convertible and Donna led the small caravan to Rich & Suzanne's house where they and Bill R. were ready in their bright red chariots. Rich & Suzanne led the group towards Randy & Sherry's home in Greentucky. The caravan there was very pleasant and uneventful until we turned off US40 near Randy & Sherry's when suddenly Rich's throttle accidentally stuck wide open and he wasn't able to unstick it until according to unnamed witnesses he hit 118. Then fortunately he was able to get the throttle unstuck and hit the brakes hard just in time to make his next turn. Greg was of course very concerned and so he decided to stay right with his friend most of the way and then he backed off as friendship only goes so far. Greg did discover an interesting phenomenon. In the past when he had accidentally hit speeds in excess of the speed limit there has been an ever rising squeak coming from somewhere around the passenger seat which had a volume that seemed to be directly proportional to vehicle speed. This time the squeak was not heard. Greg now believes that the squeak must be related to weight on the passenger seat which was empty because Donna was driving her Vette. After Rich figured out the throttle problem everyone else caught up and we eventually arrived at Sherry & Randy's. Chris & Paula White joined us there and we found Randy out on his porch listening as he had apparently been able to hear Rich's mechanical problem with his throttle.

We all enjoyed a delicious and bountiful breakfast that Sherry had whipped up in her kitchen; 2 types of egg casseroles, toasted English muffins, butter, jam, fresh fruits, orange juice, mimosa and fresh hot coffee! Yum! Sarah Lee brought along a genuine home baked Sarah Lee sour cream coffee cake. Talk about the real thing! Not to be out done, Dick brought his specialty; cold, fried Spam. YUM!! Bill said he had 2 chocolate chip cookies that he had snuck out of the vault after Cheryl left for work but alas he said he wasn't gonna share. It was all very delicious and the only regrets that were heard was an occasional muttering about wishing we had some grits.

After this feast we all loosened our belts, crawled out to our Vettes and tugged and stretched the seat belts around us until they clicked. Sherry in her white '92 Vette then led 8 other gorgeous Vettes over to the Greenfield Meals on Wheels Fest car show in Riley Park. She took through and around the several newly installed roundabouts that Greentucky has installed in order to try and change their town handle to Greenmel. Randy trailed the pack in his red '99 Vette in case any of us got confused or dizzier on the roundabouts. Very impressive indeed!

This was an open car show which is unusual in that they gave cash awards. They gave out a Top 5 award along with an award for best paint with a $100 cash prize, a People's Choice trophy with a $100 cash prize and a Best of Show trophy accompanied by a $200 cash prize! The weather was just perfect, sunny skies with a cool start to the day and temperatures that reached just into the 80's with a steady cooling breeze. We were able to park all cars together with most of them under shade trees which helped immensely with the detailing tasks. Rich and Bill both brought their car show canopies so as the sun moved we had our homemade shade. The show provided food for purchase and there was a drive-in restaurant just across the street with good food and ice cream so we knew we weren't going to starve if breakfast wore off.

We finished our detailing work, sat back and enjoyed each others company. It was one of those days you just didn't really want to end. Eventually though we were called to order and Greg & Donna were lucky enough to win a Top 5 prize. The big winner of the day though was our friend, Glenn Nulty, who took home the Best of Show trophy, won the $200 loot and gets to have his beautiful 2004 black convertible on next year's dash plaque!

After the show we packed up our tents, chairs and detail supplies. Both Bill and Sarah decided to call it a day and headed for home, probably dreaming of fried Spam. The rest of us made it as far as the nearest Montana Mike's where we stopped and did what we all do best, eat! Some great food, fun conversation, maybe a little mischief by Chris (probably too much sun or mimosa...) and eventually we all headed back to our Vettes for a very enjoyable ride home. Before we did that though Chris decided to have some fun with Dick and started to talk about how black the approaching clouds looked. This of course made Dick very nervous that his car might get wet (He still hasn't fully recovered from driving his Hot Rod Lincoln through a mud puddle at last weekend's Progressive Dinner) and he was last seen pulling out of the parking lot in a hurry with a look of grave concern on his face. It was either the threat of rain or it could have been the Spam.

If you don't usually go to car shows you should consider trying a couple as they are always a great time when you get to spend the day with such good friends and enjoy the Corvettes together!
