2016 Strawberry Fest 06/11

The annual Crawfordsville Strawberry Fest Corvette Car Show was held on June 11, the absolute hottest day of the year so far. The early morning trek there saw 10 Corvettes leave Paradise Cafe' around 8:30 and pick up a few more members along the way. Once there the group found the shadiest spots that they could then they began to enjoy the laid back format of the event. Late in the afternoon a number of the remaining club members learned that they were also winners at the show when at least 10 members received plaques for different classes along with Best in Show, Best Modified, Most Original, and the two organizer's plaques. A very good showing by the hardy group of car show enthusiasts. Among the members that attended were Greg n Donna, Buddy H, Paul & Londa, Al & Terri, Rich & Suzanne B, Gary & Marian C, Randy & Sherry S, Chris & Paula W, Linda W, Bob & Sherry W, Charles Beatty, Dolly Austin, Terry A, Ray Hieston, John Rash & Sherry Sawyer, Keith R, Bill Reynolds, Jim & Pam K, Butch & Tammy D, Susie H & Terry S (sans Vette), John Phillips, Alan & Judy Carnahan, Dick & Karen Higgins, Bryan & Margaret Yeisley.
Thanks to Greg, Rich, Tammy, & Keith for the pictures

Not outta gas
On the road again... We went to the Strawberry Fest Corvette Show today. First we met at Paradise Cafe and then Donna and I led a caravan of about a dozen Vettes to a meeting place at SR32 & 75. There were several other Vettes already there when we arrived and then we were soon joined by another caravan from the SW side. From there we all went to the show together with a beautiful sight of about 25 Vettes in a row. After the show we started home following Linda White in her Buckskin C3. The A/C was howling to combat the blustery 96 degree outside temperature and we were cruising along at 65ish when the cruise control kicked out. No matter, I figured I'd just ease into the throttle and as I did so I got that sinking feeling as the car continued its drop in speed. The engine had quit and a quick look at the zero oil pressure on the gauge confirmed the obvious. I pulled into a farmer's driveway and tried to restart the engine. It cranked but wouldn't even cough. Fuel pump cut out I'm thinking... Soon Paul & Londa Habecker came along and Donna waved and they pulled over and stopped. Paul wanted to know if I was out of gas and I assured him I wasn't but thoughts of becoming a member of the ever growing "Outta Gas Club" did dart through my head. Just to rule gas out as an issue, Paul drove me back a few miles to a truck stop where I blew $20 on a leaky gas can and took a couple of gallons of gas back to the Vette. While I was gone Buddy Hodgdon came by and stopped and kept Donna and Londa company. Thanks Buddy. We had thoughtfully left them under a shade tree by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and wished them good luck. We did leave Air Merlin with them for protection. If attacked the strategy was to have Merlin shower the attacker with licks and kisses until he ran off in a slobbery state of frustration. Using my freshly purchased "Made In China" leaky gas can I managed to get a few drops into the Corvette gas tank while depositing quite a bit of the rest down the side of the car and onto the gravel. Trust me, I didn't ignore my hands or my feet while doing this and they each got enough fuel to get us at least a couple of blocks. I left the new can for the farmer in hopes he needed an extra leaking storage container. The engine did start which I was happy to see. We thanked Paul & Londa for their help and they resumed their trip home. We then drove back to the truck stop to top off the tank to make sure the issue wasn't low fuel. It hiccupped once on the way but otherwise ran fine. At the station it took 3 gallons to top it off and I sighed relief... I might still end up stranded in some God forsaken weed patch but at least I wasn't going to be inducted in the "Outta Gas Club"! After paying for the gas we headed once again for home and a few miles down the road as my speedometer crept up north of 60 the car momentarily cut out but then stayed running. Fearing my fuel pump was dying I slowed and ran about 50 the rest of the way home and the car ran fine. I had cut the A/C off for the return trip in case too much electrical draw had tripped a circuit and finally when we got back into civilization I switched it back on to the glee of both Donna and Merlin. Guess I'm going to have to figure out what's going on as that's the Vette we plan to take on the several overnight trips coming up starting in July. All's well that ends well but for a while this day it was more than just the weather that was making me sweat! Again, thanks to Paul & Londa Habecker and Buddy Hodgdon for their much appreciated roadside assistance!
(Editor's Note -- will we get the REAL story if he did really run out???)
