​Door County - Thursday 9/14

Thursday dawned with a bit of fog but soon burned off to a what was to be a beautiful for top down / off cruising for the assembled group. Charlie had set the drive up with Mike on the previous evening and it had been decided that it would be a light house tour along with other sites. The meeting time was at our hotel at 10:30, but in true Corvette Indy time fashion Mike was there early and ready to go at 10:15! Ten of the couples had decided to go so the 11 Corvettes were soon heading to their first stop of Cana Island Light House which is on the lake Michigan side of the peninsula across from Sister Bay. Upon arriving in the lot the group was actually able to form one line of Corvettes as one of the other visitors moved his pickup so it could happen. Group pictures were even taken then in front of the line. After walking from the lot the group found that the usual walking path to the island was covered with ankle deep water, hence a wagon ride was needed there. Everyone piled climbed aboard for the couple of minute ride. Once on the island they were saw the beautiful, still active, light house and the area that is being restored around it. None of the group wanted to pay the extra $5 to take the 97 step hike to the top, but gladly paid $7 to see the interior and walk around the beautiful setting. After picture taking and sight seeing we headed back to the peninsula and our next stop of lunch. This was at a nice restaurant in Baileys Harbor and while there our newest honorary member Mike Gustaveson was invited in to the club, which he greatly appreciated. Be sure to contact him if you are ever headed to Door County, as he is a full time resident with a great knowledge of the area. Once on our way again we headed to a special spot along the Lake Michigan side of the Cave Point county park. Here we got to see much of the natural beauty of where the water meets the stone of the escarpment. This area has many overhanging rock formations and a lot of caves created by the wave action of Lake Michigan. From there we headed to a friend of Mike's that had built a 1000 foot hand laid stone fence by himself over a period of 3 years. It was a true work of art. From there we headed to a gas station where most filled up to be ready for Friday's trip home along with goodbyes to Mike as he split off after leading us back to Fish Creek on the way to Sister Bay. After a bit of a rest the group headed to a Fish Boil for the evenings meal. The boil is cooked in a huge kettle over an open fire, with everyone getting to enjoy the evening watching the meal of white fish, red potatoes, and sweet onions along with a 'pinch of salt' boil for nearly a half hour. At the very end of the cooking time Londa rang the dinner bell as the fire gets an final boost to boil over the oil film and leave clear water before the pulling out the food holders. It is quite a site to see as the flame erupt and pot spills over and puts the fire out. The Fish Boil meal was good, potatoes and onions great but too many fish bones for most, while a few opted for other available meals from the menu. Once done with desert the group headed back to the Inn at a slow pace as a local decide mid 20's was a safe speed. At the Inn everyone said their goodbyes as a few were heading out early in the morning, more were leaving at 8:30 after breakfast, and a couple of others were taking a different route as they were spending another night on the trip. The great trip was coming to it's end with lots of thanks to Paul and Londa and special goodbyes to Jim & Shelly who will have put well over 2000 miles on their Grand Sport with the round trip from their new home in Mooresville NC.
